2. You can more easily stay within your budget. If you're starting out $50 to $200 or more ahead, that money can be put to other uses.

3. You may also get a break on the actual blueprint sets that the builders will use to complete the project. Most blueprints come in sets of 5 with the cost starting out at $500 to $800 for a small home.

Are there any disadvantages to using free house floor plans? You bet!

1. Limited layout choices. If the house plans are free, the architects are only going to give away those house plans with limited appeal and a limited amount of time spent on design.

2. Inflexibility. Architects may not offer the option to add your own unique ideas to the design if the house plan was a freebie.

3. Cost of customizing the design. If there are design customizations that are a necessity, the cost of the house plan could quickly spiral out of control and out of budget.
